DOST-PCIEERD funds CapSU Burias R&D project

Engr. Monalyn Oloroso virtually signed a contract under the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD) Regional Research Institution (RRI) on September 23, 2021 via Zoom after getting the approval of the project “Development of Optimized Pineapple Fiber Scraping Machine”.

The said project was a collaborative work from the faculty members of the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering.

It aims to develop an optimized mechanical pineapple fiber extractor in terms of the extraction capacity.

The authors were inspired to conduct this research as Philippine-made piña fabric remains to be an important product of the country and where a brighter future is seen as the industry is revived with the designer’s desire to produce innovative fashion materials.

Presently, pineapple leaf fiber for hand weaving is extracted by hand scraping with the use of coconut shells, glass, or porcelain, but is considered a very tedious process and which results to low scraping capacity and efficiency. This project is therefore imperative to mechanize the said process considering optimum performance in terms of capacity and efficiency. The project hopes to bring impact by attempting to increase the productivity of pineapple leaf fiber scraping thereby increasing income of the leaf scrappers and the production of pineapple fiber for hand-woven fabrics.

DOST-PCIEERD Executive Director Enrico Paringit applauded the project leaders in their aim to uplift the R&D capabilities in these priority sectors in their respective regions in a pursuit to improve S&T research through their projects.

Regional Research Institution Program covers support for R&D to new researchers, scientists and engineers (RSEs) and new institution members of PCIEERD Consortium to assist them in the development of research capabilities and eventually increase the available RSEs in the region.

According to Engr. Oloroso, upon working on this project, they encountered difficulties such as deadline, the submission of proposals to the website of the agency, and time of presentation which is too limited.

However, she still manages to overcome it and was able to pass the evaluation.

            This activity will pave the way for more competitive academic and research facilities within our priority areas. This will drive more opportunities and more inclusive growth in delivering innovations for the people, especially in the regions.

PIA-6 holds PIA Journ Talk Series 2021

The Philippine Information Agency – Region 6 embarked on this year’s journalism talks, dubbed as “PIA Journ Talk Series 2021” that was attended by student-writers, editors, photojournalists, and advisers of high school publications on October 13-15 and by college publications on October 20-22 via Zoom application.

The virtual training introduced the three-time Emmy Award-winning broadcast journalist, Ms. Henni Espinosa, the former sports writer of the Philippine Daily Inquirer who is currently the Broadcast and Production Head of the Philippine Football Federation, Mr. Cedelf Tupas, and the multi-disciplinary artist and photojournalist whose works were already featured in abroad, Mr. Aeson Baldevia, who served as resource speakers in sports writing, broadcasting, and photojournalism, respectively.

Other experts that were invited to talk about Development Communication, news and feature writing, editorial/opinion writing and copy reading, as well as writing for science and technology, culture and the arts, and page design and layout were Ms. Elsa Subong, a freelance Communication and Research Consultant, Mr. Eric Loretizo, an experienced Media and Public Relations Specialist, Mr. Francis Allan Angelo, the Editor-in-Chief of Daily Guardian, Ms. Alicia Sol Salazar, the Regional Information Officer of DOST VI, Professor Tito Genova Valiente, a respected film and art critic, Engr. Ray Adrian Macalalag, an Engineer cum Graphic Artist, and Mr. Marco Duenas and Mr. Alfred Lucot who were both digital strategists.

When asked about his significant learnings, Mr. Jay Ramon Alayon, one of the Filipino editors of the CapSUnian Echo who attended the PIA Journ Talk Series 2021, mentioned in an online interview that, “One of the most valuable lessons I've taken away from the Campus Journ Talk Series 2021 is that journalism is not dead. It is constantly evolving, which is why PIA Region VI is continuing its passion and goal to keep journalism as close to the heart of young journalists as possible.”

For students and advisers to assess their acquired learnings and master the knowledge they have obtained, the webinar series conducted writeshops and workshops where they can showcase their writing skills.

            CAPSU BURIAS CONDUCTS FIRST MODULE DISTRIBUTION FOR AY 2021-2022

         Capiz State University-Burias Campus carried out its first distribution of learning modules on September 9-10, 2021 at the Campus Covered Gymnasium.

      The academic year 2021-2022 formally opened last August 23, 2021 and with that, preparations were implemented to address the start of the class despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The four college departments of CapSU-Burias were scheduled appropriately to avoid large number of students gathering in the vicinity of the campus. To strictly ensure the safety and security of everyone, the following schedule were as follows:

         First Day (September 9, 2021) - CAF & COE

         Second Day (September 10, 2021) – COE & DABE

     The issued safety guidelines of the health authorities were followed to avoid the wide spread of the infectious virus. Apart from these, social distancing and proper queuing were observed the help of student officers at the gymnasium. Moreover, students were required to sanitize their hands before getting their modules.  

    The collaborative effort from the administration, faculty, staff and student leaders paved the way for the first module distribution to be done in accordance with the new normal set-up.

 

TEACHERS’ DAY: A CELEBRATION OF STRENGTH AND RESILIENCE

    The heroes of today are not wearing capes but they are wearing masks and school uniforms. They inspire curiosity and a lifetime love of wisdom. They’re experts at boosting confidence through the right mix of motivation and instruction. They serve alternately as student-squabble mediator, supportive listener, and all-around problem fixer. They are armed with their passion, love, and determination to influence, educate and empower young minds.

    Amidst the pandemic,the Supreme Student Council spearheaded by Mr. James E. Villasis led this years Teachers Day Celebration virtually. SSC Officers, put an extra effort by initiating a frame to be used by students in updating their Facebook profile together with their suggested caption as a means of showing their appreciation and gratitude.  Furthermore, random messages and entries sent by the respective students on the comment section were read by the host for teachers to listen.

    According to Mr. Villasis, "This year's theme focuses and recognizes the immense role of teachers towards overcoming challenges especially on the sector of education and promoting education despite the pandemic. Our teacher is the light of the world, the beacon in the dark and the hope that gives us strength to survive". He also added that"Education is one of our effective armor to conquer adversities. Let's put in our mind that-MOST if not all the people who are working to make things go round today, are once a student. They were educated to become who they are today".

        The virtual event ended with the closing remarks of Mr. Jay Ramon M. Alayon, SSC Vice-President, by expressing his warm gratitude to all teacher and spotlighting the role and importance of educators amidst pandemic. Indeed, Capsunians proves that amidst adversities, they can create pleasure to all teachers by celebrating it virtually.

 D' INDAK BUSAO SECURES SPOT IN GRAND FINALS

 Mambusao dance troupe, D' Indak Busao has made it to the Grand Finals of Raffy Tulfo In Action Tiktok Dance Challenge Season 2 after winning the Daily and Weekly rounds last August 9 and 13, respectively, having the total price of 30,000 pesos. 

 Eight students from CapSU Burias namely; Jazelle Leonardo, Jay Ramon Alayon, Jansen Jay Francisco, Mica Alondra Montaño, Dinde Legaspi, Jessa Veloria, Renalyn Capendo, Adrian Villahermosa with Nathanael Barroa, Johnray Lopez, Niel Andrie Garcia and Roberto Gavino from other schools composed the group.

 "We joined the contest to showcase our talent in dancing, to represent and give pride to our Municipality which is Mambusao and our very own Province of Capiz, to help our family in this time of pandemic. Most of all, to serve as an inspiration to our fellow youth," Alayon said.

 D' Indak Busao is the only dance troupe in Visayas who participated in the Tiktok challenge together with other participants from Luzon, NCR and Mindanao. 

The troupe was interviewed by Raffy Tulfo in its televised program and was aired last August 10 and 13. "There's no exact word that can express how happy and grateful we are when we got the chance to be qualified in the grandfinals. To all the supporters of D'Indak Busao, we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude for all the love and support that you extend to our group," he added. 

 The schedule for the grand finals wasn't announced yet, however, a champion will take home a grand price of 500,000 pesos.

 Hopes and Concerns in the New Academic Year

      Living amidst pandemic is a serious threat affecting many sectors yet education is one of the few where investment has not dried up. The country's educational institutions decided to dwell with this situation. Public and private universities reopened to distribute knowledge across borders in our society despite of living in this new normal for the future of the young generations. 

    According to CHED, blended learning is one of the proposed solutions to create new and more effective method of educating students in a new normal. Despite of piled queries and worries felt by students, teachers, and parents, their goals allowed them to believe and be confident with the processes in the new normal. They have been brought to a new world where human interaction has been limited. However, they remain strong and overcome doubts as they successfully survived the academic school year 2020-2021. As the pandemic continues, students brace themselves to whatever challenges await them. For this academic year, Capiz State University - Burias Campus continues to be committed in becoming the center of academic excellence. Modular approach will still be utilized in the delivery of the teaching-learning process. The new normal has become a part of their lives yet their struggles remain indescribable. Let’s have a glimpse on what some students think of the new academic year: 

 “My thought about this new academic school year is less functional compared with face to face class because we submit projects to pass not to learn, we have different style of learning and we can't apply it all online.”- Jacqueline G. Pontino, First year, CAF 

“I think this academic year is harder compared to the recent because I'm now a third year college and mostly we deal with our major subjects and it's quite challenging to take these lessons and school activities without the face to face discussions of our professors but I know our professors will guide and help us to survive this academic year. All I need to do is to do my best to understand the lessons and comply all the school activities.”- Kiah Valaquio, Third year, COM 

“I think this school year is same with last school year. It's difficult for both students and teachers, there's a lot of changes happen in this modular learning and I admit it's difficult for me to cope up because of several factors such as poor internet connection, lack of gadgets to use and there are a lot of activities and lessons that needs explanations from teachers.”- Aibie V. “My thoughts on the new academic year in the pandemic are that it is very challenging to all students who are experiencing poor signal while communicating with their teachers and there are some who does not have the capability to gain more knowledge through modules.  This may be an uncomfortable situation to some while others enjoy this set up. How ever, the truth remains that everyone is struggling and working so hard to combat what lies ahead. According to the unknown author, The harder the struggle, the glorious the triumph. It may not be easy today but keep striving, one day, you will reap what you sow, and it will be worth it.

VYING FOR POSITION, SSC, FLP HOLDS GRAND RALLY

           To present the platforms and action plans, and to convince the students a clean and efficient leadership, Capiz State University Burias Campus holds Grand Rally Campaign for aspiring leaders vying for FLP and SSC positions, July 12 via Google Meet and Facebook Live. 

          Two opposing parties for FLP faced each other virtually to persuade the students to vote for them. Kient Jerwin Tungala took the lead for Keen Innovative Leaders on Service (KILOS) Party and Christian De Pablo from Passionate Alliance of Dedicated and Active Youngsters in Overcoming New Normal (PADAYON) Party both running for Presidency.

            While the SSC aspirants have only one party which was headed by James E. Villasis of Leadership through Empowerment, Alliance, and Development (LEAD). The said program has served its purpose and encouraged the students to vote for efficient and effective new generation of leaders for a brighter CapSU Burias.

Bachelor of Physical Education Conducts 1^st Virtual BPEd Day

     The Bachelor of Physical Education, one of the minor organization existing in College of Education celebrates its 1^st virtual BPEd day with the theme: “Promoting and Utilizing Physical education in the New Normal” via Google Meet and Facebook live last July 9, 2021.

         The purpose of the program is to highlight the importance of Physical Education, to hone and strengthen the BPEd student’s ability and showcase their skills and talents amidst the pandemic.

            Mr. Gilbert V. Dela Torre, was the resource speaker of the said program who presented and emphasized the vital role of Physical Education in the curriculum.

            The BPEd day is composed of activities which displayed spectacular talents and skills of BPEd students in Spoken Poetry, Image in Motion and Tiktok Dance Challenge with family.

            The one-day virtual event inculcated a significant reminder that despite of uncertainties and global crisis, the value of Physical Education should never be neglected and is still a catalyst promoting and utilizing the importance of Physical Education on various online platforms.

                CAPSU Burias distributes modules despite exposure to COVID19

    COVID-19 pandemic continues to disrupt the sanity of students, however teachers and other school stakeholders try so hard to bridge the gap between distance education and service.

    The nation has been in pandemic mode for a year and a half yet the virus continue to spread at a slow burn. As of May the sudden escalate of COVID cases in Capiz brought an intermittent lockdowns for the different municipalities of the province. The different sectors have been affected including education.

    Capiz State University, Burias Campus have discouraged their students to enter the campus for almost a month to secure the safety of the students, teachers and staff. As teachers and students embark on this challenging journey, retaining a sense of normality in education is very crucial. To ensure that the students learning remains uninterrupted despite of various circumstances brought by the pandemic, the school decided to establish an alternative plan regarding on module retrieval and distribution. Instead of doing a module retrieval and distribution in the campus, the school opted to deliver the modules of students to their municipality. Teachers remain true to their commitment. They never hesitate to face the unseen enemy and risk their life just to bring the modules to almost 10 municipalities.

    Module Retrieval and Distribution happened for 4 days. They started to distribute on June 8, 2021 in the Municipality of Sigma, Dao and Quartero; June 9 in Jamindan; June 10 in Ivisan, Altavas, and Sapian; and June 11 in Mambusao. The distribution in Municipality of Mambusao was done by cluster due to their strict

Baranggay Border Checkpoint and besides Mambusao has a large number of college students compared to other municipalities.

    The retrieval and module distribution were successfully done. The smile plastered on the teachers and medical team’s faces gives hope for everyone to never stop fighting this battle, as if it does not affect everything about the purpose and value of learning. Sadly, we are insensible for many changes the pandemicwould bring to education and learning yet Capiz State University Burias Campus works hard to adapt and establish a resilient educational system to present education with renewing wave forging a high quality education for the students.
